CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT
POSITION SUMMARY:
Assists provider in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas by assisting with patient examinations and performing general administrative duties all in accordance with practice policies. * Employees are expected to become certified within 6 months of hire.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Practice Manager and the clinical guidance of the providers, and within established policies and procedures, the incumbent performs the following essential functions:
- Reviews charts prior to patients’ scheduled appointment to assure that all requested lab work and diagnostic procedures have been completed and that reports have been returned and are accessible to the provider.
- Obtains and records patient vital signs, and reason for visit. Reviews risk assessment questions as appropriate. Updates preventative care flow sheet, allergies and medications. Verifies patient pharmacy, preferred lab and advance directives.
- Directs patients to examination rooms; assists in preparing patients for examination; assists patients in undressing, dressing and assist patient getting on and off the examination table. Notifies provider of patient’s arrival and readiness for their examination.
- Place orders for procedures, radiology, laboratory and referrals. Pre-certifies prescriptions for patients and completes prior authorizations for procedures and updates treatment orders.
- Work with specialty pharmacies and local infusion centers to coordinate patient infusion treatments
- Interacts and communicates professionally with co-workers.
- Instructs patient on procedure preparations, medication and special diet management.
- Travel required between satellite offices.
- Takes messages and assists provider with return phone calls to patients and pharmacies.
- Processes prescriptions with provider approval.
- Acts as liaison between provider and other departments, agencies and pharmaceutical representatives.
- Always maintains patient confidentiality, in accordance with HIPAA.
- Coordinates information with external laboratory.
- Maintains quality control for all medications and supplies.
- Keeps nursing area and exam rooms stocked, clean and orderly.
- Maintains stock of health information pamphlets; provides pamphlets to patients. Directs patients to proper sources of information.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures.
- Performs all similar or related duties as assigned or requested.
Education:
- Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program
- 1-2 years related work experience in physician practice setting preferred
- Strong focus on patient satisfaction and quality care
- Proficiency in using an Electronic Medical Record
Licensure / Certification:
- CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) – required within 6 months from hire
- High school diploma
