Most parents have experienced a seemingly never-ending bout of stomach issues in their kids. While occasional upset tummies and belly aches are common, if they are consistent and long-lasting, this may indicate that they may be experiencing GI issues and are in need of pediatric digestive care.
What are the most common GI issues found in infants, children, and teens?
If you suspect that your child is suffering from a GI disorder, you aren’t alone. There are many issues that are relatively common among youth and with the right treatment and diet, your child can live an active lifestyle.
Below you will find some of the most commonly identified GI conditions found in people under 18 as well as the treatments used to reduce the associated symptoms.
Constipation
Constipation occurs when stool becomes difficult to pass, usually because it is dry and large. For many children, this can cause discomfort and they will begin to avoid going to the toilet. This can result in even further issues and discomfort.
One of the best ways at-home ways to treat constipation is by giving your child fiber-rich foods and plenty of water. You can also give them over-the-counter stool softeners. If these courses of treatment don’t work, you can also consult with your pediatrician about additional options.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
When infants experience ongoing heartburn, they may be suffering from GERD. The most frequent symptoms include loss of appetite, vomiting, stomach pain, choking or gagging, hiccups, and belching.
If you think your baby may have GERD, try feeding them in an upright position. Feeding them smaller amounts of food more frequently will also help ease digestion.
This digestive condition is caused when the GI tract reacts adversely to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. If left uncontrolled, this can lead to serious damage to the small intestines and block the absorption of the nutrients that a growing child needs.
One of the most effective treatment plans for Celiac disease is simply a lifelong avoidance of gluten. Although this sounds challenging, there are more and more gluten-free products available in both grocery stores and restaurants every day which makes it easier to lead a gluten-free lifestyle.
Lactose intolerance
Found in children of all ages, someone is considered lactose intolerant if they are unable to process the sugar found in dairy, also known as lactose. Consumption of dairy-based products usually results in gas, stomach aches, bloating, and loose or watery stools.
Lactose intolerance is easily treatable by either implementing dietary changes to reduce dairy consumption or by taking lactase enzymes before ingesting dairy products.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Most frequently found in children and teens, IBD refers to two different digestive conditions. The first is ulcerative colitis, which causes inflammation in the large intestine, and Crohn’s disease, where inflammation can occur throughout the GI tract. The most common symptoms of both include water bowel movements, blood in the stool, and stomach discomfort.
Many cases of IBD can be treated through lifestyle changes and medication but in severe cases, surgery may be required. If you suspect your child has IBD, it is important to see a doctor for a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
EoE is found in the esophagus and can cause chronic allergic inflammatory disease. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, and a burning feeling. It can also cause regurgitation and a child may experience difficulty swallowing and gagging.
EoE is usually caused by an allergic reaction to a certain food which can be determined through an elimination diet. Medication can also help reduce inflammation in the esophagus, which allows food to pass more easily.
